Day 2MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

Finally came the big day, the ascent to the famous citadel.

In the morning we leave from the bus station to Machu Picchu (the schedule will be confirmed in the informative talk prior to the departure of the tour). A 20-minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the famous citadel.

Once in Machu Picchu, you will have a 2-hour guided tour with our expert guide through the ruins, where you will see The Circular Tower, the Sacred Sundial, the Royal Apartments, Main Plaza and more.

On this day many more things will be revealed to you about the Incas, their culture and the history of Machu Picchu that you have not known. After enjoying the magic of Machu Picchu, the tour, you will have time to take photos and then head back to Aguas Calientes.

You can do it on foot (1hr40min) or by bus (optional 12 USD)

Once in Aguas Calientes, after having had a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you have take the train back at 06:20 p.m. or earlier (subject to availability) to Ollantaytambo, and then take the private bus service back to Cusco.

NOTE: The train departure will be according to the SCHEDULE available by the train company. It can vary depending on how early was purchased/booked your tour.

TIPS & HACKS

FOR VISITING MACHU PICCHU

1. Book Early

  • Tickets to Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and Machu Picchu Mountain sell out fast, especially during the high season (May–September). Reserve at least 3 months in advance.
  • Train tickets also have limited availability, so secure your spot early.

2. Choose the Right Time to Visit

  • The dry season (April–October) is the best time to visit, with clear skies and minimal rain. However, it’s also the busiest season, so prepare for crowds.
  • If you prefer fewer people, consider visiting during the shoulder months (April or October).

3. Arrive Early

  • Early morning visits (6:00–7:00 a.m.) offer stunning sunrise views and fewer crowds. Plus, the morning mist adds a mystical vibe to the citadel.

4. Pack Smart

  • Essentials: Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, a reusable water bottle, insect repellent, and lightweight layers for varying temperatures.
  • If you’re visiting during the rainy season (November–March), bring a rain poncho or jacket.

5. Consider a Guided Tour

  • Hiring a knowledgeable guide will enhance your experience, providing fascinating insights into Inca history, architecture, and culture.

6. Take Altitude Precautions

  • Spend at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before heading to Machu Picchu. Stay hydrated and avoid heavy meals before your trip.

7. Bring Your Passport

  • Your passport is required to enter Machu Picchu. Don’t forget it! You can also get a unique stamp as a souvenir at the entrance.

8. Mind the Ticket Rules

  • Tickets allow entry at a specific time and follow a one-way route within the citadel. Plan your exploration accordingly.
  • Re-entry is not allowed, so explore thoroughly before exiting.

9. Maximize Photo Opportunities

  • For the best photos, visit the Guardhouse or Sun Gate (Inti Punku) for panoramic views of the citadel.
  • Early mornings or late afternoons provide softer, more flattering light for photography.

10. Respect the Rules

  • To preserve the site, drones, tripods, and large backpacks are prohibited. Follow your guide’s instructions to ensure a safe and respectful visit.

11. Consider Hiking Extensions

  • For adventurers, book a hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for breathtaking views. These trails are steep but rewarding!

12. Stay Overnight in Aguas Calientes

  • Spending the night in Aguas Calientes allows you to start your journey early and make the most of your visit to Machu Picchu.

13. Take Advantage of Free Time

  • After your guided tour, explore the site at your own pace, soaking in its tranquil atmosphere.

14. Be Mindful of Time
