Day 2Cusco - Abra Malaga – Biking - Rafting - Santa Maria

You waited this day for so long and finally, it’s here! This trek will be like no other. It’s more than just a trek full of stunning scenery, The Inca Jungle is not just a tour, it´s an experience. This is the most amazing and exciting trip to Machu Picchu.

The Inca Jungle waits for you with its majestic and impressive landscapes, streams, and more!

Between 7.00 am – 8.00 am our private transport and the staff will pick you up from our hotel. At 8:00 am the bus heads towards Abra Malaga (4350 m.a.s.l.) which is the point of departure with the bikes, we will descend for 3 hrs. passing through small villages, orchards, rivers, and streams, reaching the town Huamanmarca (1250 m.a.s.l.) around noon. approx. While descending it´s possible to see the vast changes in flora and fauna and the effect of oxygen level and altitude.

In Huamanmarca lunch will be served, a buffet restaurant that mainly uses local ingredients and prepares unique dishes. After a short break, we´ll head towards Santa Maria where you will decide if you want to be part of the rafting group or not: The ones who decided to continue with the rafting will be picked and brought to the rafting camp, where they will receive a briefing and instructions. Safety is a priority, so you will be handed out all the protective gear necessary, during the rafting a safety catamaran and cataraft will always accompany us. The rafting guides are well trained and have tons of experience on the river. Depending on the season the river will be between class III and III+, in case the river will be class IV or higher for security reasons we will cancel the rafting.

For people who prefer not doing the rafting tour will go with an assistant guide on our private bus for 20 min. to the next town of Santa Rosa, from this point, we will walk 45 mins. approx. until reaching the Ecolodge called “La Choza”, there they will have the chance to pick coca leaves coffee beans, and maybe some other fruits or vegetables.

At the end of the rafting adventure, the bus will be waiting for the group to take them to the town of Santa Rosa where they as well will start the hike towards our jungle lodge La Choza. La Choza is a unique chance to enjoy the pure jungle in its best way, the guest family who receives you there still does things in according to tradition, in a way you can say it´s traveling back in time for 200 years. Don´t worry though, there are rooms with bunk beds and normal mattresses for you to rest your night on, accompanied by an orchestra of jungle sounds.

Once arrived, it’s time to start your adventures with lots of activities along the beautiful landscape! This day is not challenging at all. It will help you to get used to the terrain and use this day as a small warm-up for the next few days. Enjoy pure nature with its mountains, rivers, and fields!

On our way, we will see wild fruits, like pineapple, pacay, avocado, and many more. The area is surrounded by many types of birds and orchids; this ecosystem belongs to the high forest and is one of the richest in terms of biodiversity of the Inca jungle. Once on top, we will see the whole valley of the lower Urubamba. The group will walk down the mountain for approx. 2hr30min until arriving at the village of Qellomayo, to have lunch and regain some of your energy.

After the meal, you will have free time to relax in a hammock and give your legs some rest. At around 4.00 pm the group arrives at Cocalmayo or better known as the hot water springs of Santa Teresa.

Cocalmayo offers several relaxing crystal clear hot springs, each with its temperature. The sound of the river and the stars at night time make it perfect scenery. After the hot springs, the group will continue to walk for about 40min until reaching the town of Santa Teresa where you will check into a nice comfortable lodge. After dinner, you all are invited to visit one of the bars to hang out with the other members of the group.
