Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Pitumarca – Chillihuani – Vinicunca - Cusco

Cusco to Rainbow Mountain

4:20 AM – 4:45 AM Early Morning Departure:
Begin your adventure with an early pickup from your hotel or designated meeting point in Cusco. As you leave the city, watch the Andes awaken with the first rays of sunlight, offering glimpses of breathtaking landscapes along the way.

5:45 AM – Breakfast Stop in Cusipata or Checacupe:
Enjoy a hearty and energizing breakfast featuring local favorites such as fresh bread, eggs, and warm coca tea, perfect for preparing you for the high-altitude hike ahead.

7:30 AM – Arrival at Phulawasipata (Trailhead):
Reach the trailhead at Phulawasipata, situated at 4,600 meters (15,091 feet) above sea level. Here, you’ll have time to use restrooms and, if needed, arrange for horse rentals for a smoother ascent.

The Hike to Rainbow Mountain

7:45 AM – Begin the Scenic Trek (4-5 km):
Embark on a memorable hike through the high Andean landscape. As you ascend, you’ll encounter sweeping vistas of glacier-capped peaks, rugged valleys, and herds of grazing alpacas. The trail, while moderate in difficulty, is made challenging by the high altitude—so take it slow, savoring each step and the crisp mountain air.

8:45 AM–9:15 AM – Arrival at the Summit of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain):
Standing at 5,036 meters (16,522 feet), you’ll be rewarded with the stunning sight of Vinicunca, a natural masterpiece adorned with vibrant hues of red, yellow, green, and gold. The colors, caused by mineral-rich sediment layers, form a breathtaking natural tapestry against the dramatic Andean skyline. Take time to soak in the panoramic views, capture unforgettable photos, and appreciate this geological wonder that has become one of Peru’s most iconic destinations.

Descent and Return to Cusco

10:45 AM – Begin Your Descent:
Retrace your steps downhill, a much easier and faster return journey. The descent typically takes about an hour, offering final glimpses of the spectacular landscape.

12:30 PM – Lunch in Cusipata or Checacupe:
After the hike, refuel with a well-deserved buffet lunch featuring a variety of local dishes, carefully prepared to give you a taste of Peruvian culinary traditions.

4:30 PM – Return to Cusco:
Relax and unwind during the drive back to Cusco, where you’ll arrive in the mid-afternoon. Reflect on an unforgettable day of adventure and stunning natural beauty as your journey comes to a close.

Essential Tips for a Successful Trip

Spend at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco to minimize the effects of altitude sickness. Coca tea and hydration are highly recommended.
  2. Physical Condition:
The hike requires moderate fitness due to the steep sections and high altitude. If you find the climb challenging, horse rentals are readily available at the trailhead.
