Itinerary

DAY 1CUSCO – CLOUD FOREST – PILCOPATA ( Manu Green Lodge)

Embark on an unforgettable journey as dawn breaks over the ancient city of Cusco. The morning sun bathes the cobblestone streets in a golden glow as we depart, ascending into the majestic Andes. Our first stop is at the enigmatic funeral towers of Ninamarca, perched at 3,750 meters above sea level. These ancient stone structures stand as silent guardians of a bygone civilization, whispering tales of the pre-Incan Lupaca people.

We continue to the folkloric town of Paucartambo, a vibrant tapestry of colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage. Stroll through its narrow streets, where traditions come alive in colorful festivals and the warm smiles of locals. As we reach Acjanaco at 4,000 meters—the gateway to the renowned Manu National Park—pause to breathe in the crisp mountain air and feel the thrill of the adventure that lies ahead.

Descending into the mystical cloud forest, you’ll enter a realm where the heavens embrace the earth. Mist drapes over a cathedral of towering trees—mighty cedars, ancient figs, and colossal kapok trees that have stood sentinel for centuries. Their immense trunks, wrapped in vines and adorned with vibrant orchids and bromeliads, create a lush tapestry teeming with life.

The forest pulses with the symphony of nature. The haunting calls of howler monkeys echo through the canopy, while playful capuchin and squirrel monkeys showcase their acrobatics in the treetops. Gaze upwards to spot flocks of macaws and toucans, their brilliantly colored feathers slicing through the mist. The underbrush may reveal the subtle movements of agoutis or, if fortune smiles upon us, the stealthy presence of a jaguar.

We’ll embark on a captivating walk to witness the dazzling Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird. Watch in awe as the vibrant males perform their elaborate mating dance—a mesmerizing display of color and movement amidst the emerald foliage. Keep your binoculars handy; the cloud forest is also home to the resplendent quetzal, its iridescent plumage shimmering like a jewel, and the trogon, known for its striking hues.

The possibility of encountering the elusive Spectacled Bear adds to the excitement. As South America’s only bear species, spotting one is a moment to cherish—a true testament to the untouched wilderness of Manu.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at the quaint town of Pilcopata, nestled at 550 meters above sea level. Our destination is our charming Lodge, a refuge where rustic comfort meets the wild beauty of the jungle. Settle into your private room, equipped with necessary amenities, and let yourself be enveloped by the soothing sounds of the rainforest. As night falls, the symphony of nocturnal creatures will serenade you: a lullaby from the heart of the Amazon.

DAY 2PILCOPATA- ATALAYA - MACHUWASI LAKE- PAITITI LODGE

Awaken to the chorus of the jungle as dawn breaks over Pilcopata. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll journey deeper into the Amazon, winding our way by bus towards the riverside village of Atalaya, perched at 490 meters above sea level. Along the route, marvel at the lush landscapes dotted with verdant coca plantations—a plant sacred to indigenous cultures and steeped in centuries of history.

Keep your eyes sharp for the lively troops of monkeys that call this part of the rainforest home. Spider monkeys swing effortlessly through the treetops, their long limbs and prehensile tails showcasing a graceful acrobatics show. Capuchin monkeys scamper playfully among the branches, their curious gazes often meeting ours with shared wonder.

Upon reaching Atalaya, we’ll embark on a serene 30-minute boat ride along the shimmering waters of the Madre de Dios River. The boat glides smoothly, allowing you to soak in the breathtaking vistas—emerald forests stretching endlessly, the horizon punctuated by the silhouettes of towering ceiba and mahogany trees that have witnessed the passage of time.

Our destination is the enchanting Paititi Lodge, a secluded haven nestled within the embrace of the jungle. After settling into your comfortable accommodations, savor a delicious lunch prepared with local ingredients—a fusion of flavors that nourish both body and soul.

As the afternoon sun begins its gentle descent, we’ll set out for the mystical Machuwasi Lake. Here, a traditional balsa wood catamaran awaits to carry us across the tranquil waters. The lake is a mirror reflecting the kaleidoscope of the sky and the surrounding greenery—a sanctuary teeming with life.

Drift silently as the wilderness unfolds around you. Witness the prehistoric hoatzin, or “Shansho,” with its distinctive appearance and raucous calls—a bird that seems to have leapt from the pages of ancient lore. Herons and egrets wade gracefully along the shores, while colorful kingfishers dart swiftly, their keen eyes scanning for fish beneath the surface.

As dusk approaches, the lake becomes a theater of nature. Listen to the harmonious symphony of the jungle—the croaks of amphibians, the distant cries of nocturnal birds, and the gentle rustling of creatures stirring in the underbrush. Keep watch for the eyes of dwarf caimans peering just above the waterline, and perhaps catch sight of capybaras—the world’s largest rodents—grazing along the banks with their serene demeanor.

As darkness envelops the forest, we’ll return to Paititi Lodge for dinner. For the adventurous, an optional night walk offers a glimpse into the rainforest’s nocturnal world. Under the canopy of stars, guided by the soft glow of lanterns, we’ll seek out the creatures that awaken after sundown—colorful frogs, stealthy kinkajous, and an array of fascinating insects whose brilliance shines brightest at night.

DAY 3PAITITI LODGE- PARROT CLAY LICK - CLOUD FOREST- CUSCO

Rise before the sun for an experience that epitomizes the marvels of the Amazon. We’ll embark by boat for a 45-minute journey along the river to reach the renowned parrot clay lick—a spectacle of color and sound that defies imagination.

As dawn’s first light paints the sky, hundreds of parrots and parakeets descend upon the exposed clay banks. Species such as the vibrant Blue-headed Parrot, the cheerful Mealy Parrot, and the striking Yellow-crowned Amazon create a living rainbow. They gather to consume the mineral-rich clay, an essential ritual that aids their digestion and detoxification. The air fills with their cacophonous chatter—a joyous chorus celebrating the new day. Witnessing this natural phenomenon is both humbling and exhilarating, a moment where nature’s grandeur is on full display.

After immersing ourselves in this avian wonder, we’ll return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast. Nourished and invigorated, we begin our journey back to Cusco. Our boat carries us once more along the Madre de Dios River to the Atalaya pier, where our vehicle awaits.

As we retrace our path through the lush landscapes, the scenery transforms from the dense lowland rainforest back to the ethereal cloud forest. The ascent offers new perspectives—a chance to reflect on the myriad experiences and the profound beauty of the ecosystems we’ve explored.

Along the way, we’ll pass through the charming communities of Pilcopata and Chontachaca, where the rhythms of life are harmoniously intertwined with nature. The journey is punctuated with opportunities to spot wildlife we may have missed before—a final gift from the jungle.

Descending from the cloud forest, we’ll watch as the terrain shifts once more, the high Andes rising to greet us with their majestic peaks. By early evening, we’ll arrive back in the imperial city of Cusco, between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm. As we bid farewell, carry with you the memories of an adventure that touched the very heart of the Amazon—a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the lungs of Mother Earth.

Approximate arrival time to Cusco from 18:30 pm to 19:00 pm.
